A top rank for the economy does not automatically go along with top innovation results for the country’s largest firms. Moreover, continued innovation awards may lead to complacency and limited innovation efforts.

This reminds us of the well-known commercials for Ricola herb drops from Switzerland. For 15 years or so, the commercials have been asking: “Who invented it?” The question has taken on cult status and the answer to it is well known. In general, Switzerland is considered a very innovative country, but what about the innovative activities of its largest firms? Switzerland was ranked No. 1 worldwide for innovation according to the Global Innovation Index 2015 and the country has held this top position for several years.
